 Diesel water pump used to pump warm water into the ground to thaw the permafrost so the dredge wouldn't destroy it self trying to dig through the ice.

You can see the path near the snow line that the miners used to hike over the pass.  They had to have a literal ton of food and gear per person to be allowed into Canada.
