Fort Gaines Alabama

Driving across Lake Pontchartrain on an almost 24 mile bridge. Not great visibility, but interesting to do.

Fort Gaines on  Dauphin Island. Played a part in the battle of Mobile Bay during the civil war.

Looking at the "Disappearing Guns" The guns rose to fire and sank down to reload giving the appearance of disappearing.

Officers quarters.  Before the battle it was 3 stories.  Upper two were destroyed during the fight.

Cannon port to protect the outer walls of the fort.
 Gun mounts.

 Light house

 Bread ovens

10 hole outhouse.  Flushed by the tide coming in and back out.
Blacksmith shop. Still being used for demonstrations.

 Ammo lockers
Beams used for moving the shells from storage out and up to the guns.

 Officers quarters.
 Kitchen and eating area.

Part of an old ship wreck.
