I went to Richard Petty Driving to test out the ZL-1 Camaro, the GT-500 Mustang and the SRT8 392 Challenger. This was a comparison test more then a high speed multi-lap type deal. First we did 0-60 runs, then 60-0 then a cornering run and a top speed run. Top speed was limited by the length of the rear straightaway of the Las Vegas Speedway. I still managed to hit 135 in the Mustang. First thing that happened was the Mustang broke (typical Ford!) but they had a GT-350 for a backup. The Mustang was a true brute of a car. If you want pure power in a straight line without the refinement of a street car, then this is your beast. It flat out moves when you hit the gas. 0-60 was 4.7 seconds (for me) with the top speed of 135. Not as good in the corner or braking test, but brakes are for quitters!!! The ZL-1 did 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, mostly because of a better traction control system, and was amazing in the stopping. 40 feet faster then the Mustang (about 90 feet from 60-0!) Just about plants your face on the windshield! It corners incredibly well and feels the best in the brakes and corners. Top speed I hit was 124 mph. The Challenger was the most comfortable to sit in and seemed the most refined as a street car. 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and top speed of 121 mph. Very comfortable car to drive, but you don't have the real feeling that the Mustang had and the ZL-1 had to a lesser extent then the Mustang. Over all it was a great time and now I need to buy one! I wish I could have driven the GT-500, it is supposed to be incredible. Guess I'll have to come back!
The broken GT-500
The green Mustang is the one I drove.
Everyone voted for the Blue one! You didn't say what broke?
ReplyDeleteThey didn't know. Sounded like it happened before and then went away. It just lost power and wouldn't get above 80 mph.
