This is looking up a hill from the Union side. You can see some of the trenches at the bottom of the picture. The Union Soldiers trenched all the way up the hill and were going to tunnel under the emplacements above and blow them up. The battle ended before they got all the way there.
Navy memorial
Looking toward the Mississippi river.
The Iron Clad Cairo. It was sunk by a mine/torpedo in the Yazoo river. It was raised in 1960's. The metal was well preserved, but the wood, not so much! The bolts and nuts on the engine could be turned and a recovered revolver even cocked and the cylinder still turned.

The small markers are for unknown soldiers. The larger have names on them.
River boat.
Looking down from the North Fort. It was never attacked because it was believed to be to hard, or impossible, to take. Looking down from the fort, I wouldn't want to try to take it!
Tennessee memorial
Looking at one of the fortifications. The blue markers in front of it indicate how close the Union soldiers came to the fortifications
Arkansas memorial
This spot is where the surrender was discussed.
Texas memorial
You can see the trenches dug by the Union soldiers. Some of them zig zag to make it harder for the Confederate soldiers to get a good shot at them. They trenched all the way to the base of the fortifications. Close enough to have a conversation! The blue marker shows where the Union soldiers got to.

Those are some wonderful memorials. This is my favorite time in history.
