West Virginia State Penitentiary

Main entrance of the Penitentiary

 One of the back enterances
Wardens home.  Warden used to live in the Penn on the 3rd and 4th floor of the main entrance building.

Browning 30 cal liquid cooled machine gun will instill a lot of calm in an angry group of people!

Controls for the electric chair.  3 guards each pushed a button, but only one controlled the chair so the guards would never know who did the electrocution.  9 men were electrocuted in this electric chair.

 Art painted by the inmates.

This was a cafeteria then became a room to see your family.

More art in the newer cafeteria

 Guard booth in the cafeteria
 Kitchen
 Back wall and the yard.

Wardens office is the 2nd floor and living quarters were the 3rd and 4th floor.

Cell block.
The old room for meeting with your family for the inmates that weren't allowed to touch there family members.

 Post office for the prison
Chapel and yard
Now the prison, besides tours, does training for guards and police.  The obstacles along the back wall are for K9 training.

 Another cell block.
One of the cells as it would have been set up.  3 men lived in one of these cells.  Cells are 7'x5'

Prisoners were allowed to paint there cells.

New room for talking to your family.

The wagon gate was the first building built.  It housed 100 prisoners that were building the prison.
This recreation yard is where the death house used to be.  The did hangings and electrocutions there.

The first hangings were done here in the Wagon Gate and used these trap doors.

The four worst offenders stayed in one of these four identical cells.
And the 4 shared this shower.  They were kept away from the general population

One guy used dental floss and some tooth paste (tooth paste for an abrasive) and managed to cut a shiv out of the 1/8" thick steel plate on his door.  This guy was locked in his room 22 or 23 hours a day, so he had lots of time.

Leather shop.  The prisoners made leather goods and license plates.
