Flew into Fort Jefferson in a float plane. Really cool place to visit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Jefferson,_Florida
One of the old coal docks.
The other coal dock.
Front door.
Our ride
The moat.
The main walls. Pretty thick!
Built so they could shoot down the sides of the walls to fight off attackers.
The foundations are all that is left of the barracks.
8 acres inside the fort.
Powder magazine.
This building was for heating cannon balls. Start a fire in the bottom, drop the cannon balls in the upper end and take them out the lower end when they are red hot. Great for starting wood ships on fire.
Dr. Mudds cell. He was one of the 4 guys held prisoner here that participated in the assassination of President Lincoln
Hermit crab.
These shutters were pretty cool idea. They were balanced to stay closed, but when the canon was fired the gasses that escaped ahead of the ball pushed the doors open. Then they closed to to protect the gunners.
